The DPW Building Committee hosted a meeting in August regarding the planned skate park at Carlson Fields.
The primary purpose was to discuss the conceptual design of the park (size, features, etc.) and to get community input before the final iteration.
Prior to this meeting a small working group consisting of skaters, Committee Chairman Robert Garrity, and Town Projects Engineer Roger Fernandes got together with landscape designer Mike McIntyre of Action Sport Development, which was chosen to develop the skate park plan. The schematic design is a culmination of the working group’s comments.
ASD was selected to design the park by the committee through a designer selection process. McIntyre and his firm hail from California. The goal is to start construction before cold weather sets in and to complete the park by late fall of this year.
Further details may be viewed on the “Conceptual Presentation Page” provided by Action Sport Development on the Town of Hingham website, hingham-ma.gov.
Contact the Department of Public Works at 781-741-1430 with any questions about the park.
Skateboarding has usually been a touchstone for me. I got my 1st skateboard at age 10 (prolonged, lengthy ago) and spent much of my time with my best friend, Denice, cruising around our neighborhood, acting like we had been surfing the waves of Waimea as we zoomed down freshly-paved asphalt streets on clay wheels and solid wood decks with no grip tape (that’s what the gummy soles of our Van’s had been made for, ya know).
So even now, when I get on my board, the feeling of happy days return.
Maybe that’s why lately I’ve been far far more interested in just…skating. When I got back into the sport in 2004, I caught the bug to find out new tricks, to drop in, etc. I hired seriously awesome pro Kim Petersen to coach me for a few sessions.
But somewhere along the line, I either got restless with the mechanics of it all, or too chicken to push myself, or…something. And suddenly the urge for a extended strip of smooth asphalt crept back into my consciousness. I began hankering for pure, unadulterated F-L-O-W, the feeling of zooming, the essence of skateboarding, the touchstone of my pleased childhood.
I salute and cheer for all who push their limits, find out new tricks, inspire us, amaze us, and are somehow not swayed by slams (or the fear thereof!). Im thrilled that there is now a body of women to show the world what we can do on a skateboard. And I’m content as hell that I can watch from the sidelines, applauding all of you for taking risks big and little, whilst I go back to an earlier time and just…zoom.
Later skaters!
If you’ve read anything about women who skateboard, you’ll know that for each and every individual skateboarding means a multitude of things.
For some it is their meditation, or their probability to bond with friends, or an chance to push themselves or any combination of these and numerous other things. For me it really depends on the day as to what it’s, but anytime I am on the park with my family it’s a great chance to bond with my youngsters and share a thing we truly love to accomplish.
Getting in a sport that genuinely focuses on individualism, my kids and I certainly do not skate hand in hand. My son is commonly over on the big bowl dropping from the deep side trying to complete some thing new and daring. My daughter is typically zipping by means of the parts of the park she likes or challenging herself to go increased and higher inside the vert ramp. I’m normally pushing myself to do just one new factor each time we are in the park even if it is small. We do our own factor.
That becoming said we’re there for a single another to cheer on, sympathize by way of the falls and have a great laugh. There’s nothing better than showing my kids that I learned a thing new and having them cheer me on, and vice versa. Our time at the skate park is not just about what we do as people, but rather a time for us to share, bond and appreciate one particular another’s accomplishments.
As my youngsters grow older and move into getting teenagers, I can only hope that this time together is anything we can share. Even when they want their distance the skatepark and the sport of skateboarding will enable for that. Skateboarding will always be what I need it to be personally regardless of whether that’s flow, challenge, or meditation. I can only hope it really is also generally a chance for me to spend time with my children.

These are just a few in the several skateboarding magazines on the market these days. With some careful choosing, you’re bound to locate one or two to claim as favorites. A single in the excellent things about skating is that it can take so a lot of diverse forms. You can carve bowls one day, and grind a rail the following. Go screaming fast down a large hill right now, and roll around town tomorrow.
Not into flip tricks? You possibly can go for flow. Cruise and connect a single part on the park to the next. Begin a little journey on your board … and see where it takes you. Make every turn a tribute; each and every push a flawless work of art.
It happens to us all the time. Yesterday we woke up bursting with determination, and attacked concrete, shredding everything in sight. Currently we really feel like taking it quick, and skate just to feel the wind in our hair as well as the sun on our faces. No apologies. That’s just the way it is.
Skaters who hate on diverse skating styles? They’re just lost. Skaters who say you’ve to rip it up every single time you roll? Lost.
Skating is whatever you need it to be, even so you need to do it.
What kind of skater are you nowadays?
Whenever you see someone who’s struggling to find out a trick or just to remain upright, be encouraging. I often struggle to perform a thing new and could use your help and encouragement.
Please do not believe I’ll discover as quickly as you; face it, I’m 43 and not in the best shape. If I fall, it takes me longer to get up, longer to heal. It has nothing to perform with the fact that I’m a woman. It’s just harder somehow after all of these years off the board.
I broke both femurs, shattered knees and one ankle in an auto accident years ago. I still have a titanium rod from hip to knee and lots of hardware. My legs are uneven and my memory isn’t the best from a closed brain injury. I’m not whining though; I’m stoked!
I’m in fact undertaking this again . . . and I can! Yeah, I’m pretty proud of myself too. I’m healed and nobody can see the scars under my kneepads, shorts and shoes.
So in the event you see me struggling with anything, cheer me on!!!! Im performing little carves and going using the flow and falling and obtaining correct back up.
If you’re thinking about obtaining out there and skating, nowâs the time. If I can do it so can you! I’ll be there cheering you on!
Bobby and I had the pleasure of skating with Jake as well as the well-known Steve Roberts the other day. Steve’s arsenal of flip tricks is insane, and it’s generally super fun to watch him skate. We poked around the Hanley Industrial Court area and skated this loading dock to bank thingy. Steve popped a mean kickflip and varial heel, and Bobby did a noseslide on the guardrail. But after that it was just too dang hot, so we known as it a day. Excellent to see you Steve, get to filming for the Infinity video! -Worful
This is the moment we look forward to each and every year at Hometown Heroes: The Finals. It was our seventh year of the tour and our second year wrapping it at X Games.
The final ten warmed up right after Menâs Street went down. Dave Duncan and Shak got on the mic and announced 5 dudes to skate in the first of two heats. One by one, they took 1-minute intro runs, then two 12-minute jam sessions went down back to back.
Judging must have been a rough task because no one knew for sure who was going to win. The battle came down to Ke’Chaud Johnson and Julian Christianson, both previous HH Finals winners. Ke’Chaud blasted across a ridiculous flat gap and switch back lipped down the rail. Julian brought the flip tricks down the stairs and a switch front salad down the rail, which we have yet to see anyone do on tour before this year. These are just a few highlights; this was the most impressive skating we’ve seen at the finals to date!
In the end, Julian reclaimed the number one spot and stuffed his wallet with $5,000 and a earned a year’s worth of free Chipotle.
Pumping on a half-pipe isn’t uncomplicated, and itâs even much more complicated to explain. But were gonna try, due to the fact we’ve all been there, stuck on the ramp, unable to maintain momentum. It takes time and practice to best your pump, but you’ll get it eventually.
Here are some tips that have helped a lot of of us. Everyone learns differently. It’s significant to give them all a test!
1. Comprehend that pumping is a lot like swinging on a swing. If you miss a pump youll lose momentum.
2. You can find two spots it is possible to pump on each wall of a half pipe: in the bottom of the transition, and in the top. You have to pump both techniques, not just going forward.
3. In general, keep your weight centered on your board between your bolts, and maintain your body perpendicular to your board and also the riding surface. Preserve your knees fluid and bent.
4. When you hit the wall you’re unweighting to enable yourself to go as high as doable up the wall; if you begin to come back down you’re putting as much weight as feasible on the board to shove it forward down the wall.
5. Whenever you weight down in the apex — correct as you’re about to come back down — it typically helps to reach down and test to touch the board with your hand. That’ll put you inside the suitable crouched position. Stand up a bit again as you get to the flat.
6. Initiate your pump from your calves. Your legs really should burn after only a few minutes of pumping.
7. Some persons swing their arms back and forth to help with pumping. Others sort of thrust their hips ahead of them or up the ramp to help. It’s all what works for you.
